Back to School Home Organization!

back to school Sep 02, 2024

It is SO IMPORTANT to have consistent rhythms and expectations as we enter a NEW rhythm, transitioning from SUMMER fun to FALL activities and school!

Here are a few considerations as you get your "COMMAND CENTER" up and running and develop efficient systems!

Back-to-School Command Center Essentials: Consistent Placement for Success

School-Related:

  • Backpacks: Designate a specific spot for each child's backpack, ideally near the door or in a mudroom. This prevents them from being misplaced and ensures they're ready to go in the morning.
  • Lunch Bags/Boxes: Have a designated area in the kitchen or near the backpacks to store lunch bags or boxes, making it easy to pack lunches in the morning.
  • School Supplies: Keep frequently used supplies, like pencils, pens, and notebooks, in a readily accessible drawer or caddy near the homework area.
  • Homework/Assignments: Create a designated folder or tray for incoming homework and assignments. This helps keep track of due dates and prevents papers from getting lost.
  • School Calendars/Schedules: Display school calendars or schedules in a prominent place on your command center to stay informed about important dates and events.
  • Permission Slips/Forms: Have a specific folder or tray for incoming permission slips and forms that require signatures.

Extracurricular Activities:

  • Sports Equipment: Designate a bin or area for storing sports equipment, such as cleats, balls, or uniforms. This keeps them organized and readily available for practices and games.
  • Music Instruments: If your child plays a musical instrument, create a dedicated space for storing it, along with any sheet music or accessories.
  • Activity Schedules: Display schedules for extracurricular activities on the command center to keep everyone informed and avoid conflicts.

General Organization:

  • Keys: Hang keys on designated hooks near the door to avoid last-minute searches.
  • Outerwear: Have a designated area for coats, hats, and gloves, especially during the colder months.
  • Shoes: Use a shoe rack or cubbies to keep shoes organized and prevent them from cluttering the entryway.
  • Mail/Paperwork: Have a tray or basket for incoming mail and paperwork to prevent it from piling up on counters.

Additional Considerations:

  • Age of Children: Tailor your command center to the ages and needs of your children. Younger kids may need lower hooks or more visual cues.
  • Space Availability: Adapt your command center to the space available in your home. If you have limited space, consider using a wall-mounted organizer or a portable command center.
  • Family Preferences: Involve your family in the design and organization process to create a system that works for everyone.

By creating a designated space for these essential items, you can streamline your morning routine, reduce stress, and set your family up for a successful school year.
