Preparing your Home for a Precious New Baby!
Aug 21, 2024
Welcoming a new baby into your home is an exciting time, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming, especially when it comes to preparing your space. Organizing your home before your little one arrives can REALLY help create a calm and welcoming environment for your growing family and support you in caring for yourself and your baby postpartum! Here are some tips to get you started:
1. Declutter and Simplify:
- The first step to organizing is often decluttering. Go through each room in your home and identify items you no longer need or use. Donate, sell, or discard these items to create more space and reduce visual clutter.
- Focus on areas where your baby will spend the most time, such as your bedroom, the nursery, living room, and kitchen.
2. Nursery Essentials:
- The nursery is your baby's primary space, so it's important to create a functional and peaceful environment. Get to it and set up essential furniture like a crib, changing table, and comfortable chair for feeding- even if you won't be using this space for a few weeks, it is important that it is set up (if possible) as you may not have energy or time to accomplish this task once the baby is born.
- Organize baby clothes, diapers, and other supplies in drawers or bins for easy access (labeling is a very helpful design addition to help ALL caregivers and partners in accessing supplies that they will need and sharing the workload of caring for a new baby).
- Consider creating a designated area for diapering and changing to keep those supplies organized and within reach.
3. Living Room Prep:
- As your baby grows, they'll likely spend a lot of time in the living room. Create a safe and comfortable space for them to play and explore.
- Store baby toys and books in bins or baskets that are easy to access and put away.
- Consider investing in a baby-safe play mat or activity gym to provide a designated play area.
4. Kitchen Organization:
- The kitchen is a high-traffic area, so it's essential to keep it organized and efficient.
- Designate a space for baby bottles, formula, and feeding supplies.
- Invest in storage solutions like drawer dividers and pantry organizers to maximize space and keep items tidy.
5. Create a "Command Center":
- A command center is a designated area for important information and daily essentials. This could be a bulletin board, whiteboard, or a simple wall calendar.
- Use this space to keep track of appointments, feeding schedules, to-do lists, and other important reminders. You can also create a digital "Command Centre" by using a shared calendar with your partner or anyone supporting you in caring for your baby. Digital support is VERY helpful, and when your brain is figgy and not on top of its game, it is helpful to have visual support in a physical command centre as well. It doesn't have to be a large space or fancy by any means, but a designated space helps everyone get on board and share the distribution of tasks with ease!
6. Safety First:
- Baby-proofing your home is crucial for ensuring your little one's safety. Install safety gates, outlet covers, and cabinet locks to prevent accidents.
- Secure furniture to the wall to prevent tipping hazards, and keep small objects out of reach to avoid choking hazards.
7. Enlist Help:
- Don't hesitate to ask for help from friends, family, or a professional organizer.
- Having extra hands can make the process more enjoyable and less stressful.
Remember:
- The goal is to create a functional and welcoming space for your growing family. Don't stress about perfection, and focus on creating a home that feels comfortable and safe for everyone.
- Take your time, prioritize tasks, and enjoy the process of preparing for your little one's arrival.
